6. The Protective Force on the Island.

There were no Military or 'laval Forces.

There was a force of Police consisting of:-

1 European Sergeant,

4 Indien Constables, and

1 Chinese Detective.

Their duties were:-

From 5 a.m. till the night duty men parade the

boatmen are utilised as Station Charges. The

European Sergeant is usually in the Charge Room by 6.30 a.m. and is generally about the Station all day and from 8 p.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. If he goes away on patrol the Indian P.C. on day duty is placed in

charge of the Station.

The detective would be about wherever & whenever he was required". The disposition of the Police force other than in

relation to their duties.

The Police Station buildings appear to have been entirely abandoned as residential quarvers during the summer montius owing to the neat of the premises.

The European Sergeant and his wife occupied at night a large mat-house situated on a hill about 250 yards inland and overlooking the village.

All the Indian Folicemen were married.

One with his wife occupied a small tenement in the village about 170 yards from the rolice Station in a westerly

direction.

A second similarly resided in a hut about 60 yard-
