I have the honour to acknowledge
with thanks the receipt of your letter of 5th.September on the subject of a prepesed expedition aginst pirates in the 1 lmal in the vicinity of 1hone, which are claimed both by Portugal «a ühina.
.. receipt of Your Excellency's letter, 1 uirected the Colonial beccrtary to write you a private letter intimating that, an you did not desire the co-operation: of a British Raval force, that part of the proposed programme would be omitted. those two Goverments, I have asked the Chinese officials
concerned to visit acne today to make the necessary arrange-
-nents. I an sending with ten r...k.hallifax,xe¿istrar
General, because he was employed in the negociations between
this Government and the Chinese for a joint expedition. Re
is therefore well conversant with all the facts of the case
and may be of assistance to Your Excellency.
i moto t at you are of opinion that there is more
probability of finding pirates on the islands to the South
-west of the Weeb kiver. I would observe that if there are
pirates
