Bith reference to your cypher telegram of the 3rd.
instant, I have the honour to inform you that the Foreig
Secertary and the Commissioner of Police of the Canton
Goveramont arranged yesterday with Commodore struther te
make a joint expedition against the pirates at Wong Kun on
the night of the 9th instant. The British co-operation
will be limited to the wasistuace eľ a naval flotilla.
The Chinese authorities propose to despatch 1000 now te
conduct tile operations in land. I am sending t. e Colorial
Lecretary to ..acao today to invite the Portuguese Govt.
to limit teir co-operation to operations on the water
designed to prevent the escape of pirates te Portuguese
territory.
i have informed the Governor of Lacae that, at an
interview which the Celonial secretary had yesterday with
the Foreigi pecratary and the Commissioner of Police of
the Cantom Government, r.Severn stipulated that the
Abstention of the Portuguese Goveræment( if it agrees to
abstain Tren joining in the operations in territory which
is 1. dispute between Chlia and Portugal, will in no way
prejudice the future consideration of such claim by
Portal. I shall be obliged if you will co unmicate
tris stipulation in a formal manner to the Chinese
authorities.
