enclosed, and to acknowledge the receipt of your

telegram of the 24 instant infomulls me that you

2. Pending your reply to my telegram I arranged

with Coro doro Anstruther and Colonel St.John to

send a Naval and a Military officer to Lacao to

gain informatain as to the nature of the approaches

by water to the island where my information indicated

that the pirates made their headquarters. I gave

Lieutenant R.li.Crosse, Royal Artillery, of the

General Staff, a letter of introduction to the

Acting Governor of Macao. The latter placed every

facility in the way of the officers in obtaining the

information which was desired and placed a large

scale map of the adjacent islands at the disposal

of Lieutenant Stainer, Royal Navy,
