Hon. Colonial SecretaTM,

432

I have asked the licensees for particulars

of (a) value of liquors purchased (b) gross receipts from sale of same (c) and net profit for year 1909. Replies from all have been received except from the German Tavern. They all state they keep no books except the Praya East and the International since August 1909 (but the licensee cannot understand them).

They evidently appear to have thought that there was some

question of reducing the licence fee and have all made out

either that it is a hand to mouth business, or that it is run

at a log3.

The value of these businesses may be taken

as gufficient to keep the tikis licensee's family in the

condition in which that class live i.e. they produce about $2,000 to $3,000 per annum.
