PSIUMOTINTS

-ably suited for their purpose. They hold from 18 to 20 patients with lavatory, room for attendant and a room for excitable patients. They are constructed of brick and reinforced concrete and are amply supplied with doors and windows. A verandah runs round the whole building. The beds are of iron framework fitted with

pine boards.

The other building consists of two stories

and have been repaired and adapted.

Except under medical orders all patients are allowed to wander about as they like and all doors are by order

left open.

The food varies according to the amount paid

but that for "free" patiente is on the same scale as that sup- -plied at our Lunatic Asylum and is of good quality and sufficient

in amount.

The patients work or not as they like, those who work being given one cent a day for tobacco. The work consists of grass cutting, filling in ponds and ditches with sand, stone cutting, ac., for building, sewing, making and repairing

clothes, laundry work etc.

The Medical Officers, being expert Chinese

Scholars, a very complete history is kept of each case.

There is no question, however, that the place is very overcrowded. The proper number should be 310 but on my visit there were 386, the verandahs being utilised for the surplus. This is not of Luch consequence in fine weather but in cold or wet weather, the condition is serious, more accomodation is urgently needed.

There is plenty of room for this but funds are lacking. Should a grant of 83,500 be given by this Government it is proposed to at once accept the offer of the Head of Police to pay for erection of a matshed which would be completed in about 14 days and to proceed with erection of one or more two-storeyed houses to hold 60 or 70 patients, each, which, it is expected, would be ready for occupation in six months.
