be said that I have done my other work during this period. That is per-
fectly true; but I have always had an unfortunate habit of sleeping 51

little and rising very early, so that I nearly always can put in 10 hours work a day. Mr Justice Gomperts has given me assistance in the Assize work, but I am certain he will say that I have not called on him unfairly, and that I have not shirked the big cases in Original Juris, diction. The revision work has been done on Saturdays, Sundays, holi- (Ays, early mornings, between 6 and 8 and after office hours, and dur-- ing the tiffin hour, as I never eat a substantial lunch. To give some further idea of what the strain of the work has been since I went on leave in the middle of April I have worked steadily at nothing else
for 10 to II hours a day. And the end of it all is, the Government
calmly rejects my work and declines payment even of the original
amount due because there are some mistakes. It is really almost incre-
dible; still more incredible that the gentlemen who are now acting as
Governor,Colonial Secretary, and Attorney General should be astonished
that I am indignant, and thatI should seek redress in the Courts.
But the point to which all this tends must not be mistaken. It is not put forward as a justification of errors which undouĺtedly exist,
for no one is more annoyed than I am that they should exist; but that
the circumstances in which the work was done were so complicated, the
work itself so elaborate, the inevitable conditions of printing so weak,
and that therefore quite apart from the illegality of it, it was not a
case for enforcing blindly against me the penalty whệch has driven me
to seek redress. The work involved, the spirit in which I have under-
taken it, the amount of it and its nature have been entirely overlooked,
and the Government has concentrated its energies on the mistakes.
Finally and again, I do not justify the mistakes, but am ready and al-
ways have bem willing to put them straight by reprinting, but the
Government insists on what it cannot get a letter-proof teaxt quite
ignoring everything that has gone to make the Volumes what theyare.
On the question of the copyright only one word need be said. The law
is plain that there is no copyright in a statute, but there is in the
form of its presentation in an edition; and my work permeates every page.
With regard to my claim for some remuneration for Mr Suffiád, the
case is perfectly plain. The work he did was the legislative dide of
the revision; and the case for temuneration is stronger than in the case
of Sir John Carrignton's assistant.
