I have the honour to confirm my telegram of

21st. June which was to the following effect:-

"I have arranged in consultation with the General "Officer Comranding that six companies of Indian Infantry "shall occupy certain points near the Northern Frontier of *the New Territories owing to the disturbed conditions pre- "-vailing on the Chinese side of the frontier resulting in "raids by armed gangs into British Territory involving con- "-siderable loss of property and growing feeling of insecurity

"in our villages".

2.

On 9th. May the report, of which I enclose a copy, was made to me by the District Officer at Taipo. This report was forwarded to His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General at Canton for communication to the Provincial Authorities with the request that steps might be taken to apprehend the robbers all of whom came from the district bordering on the frontier of the New Territories. His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General in reply stated that the Bureau of Foreign Affairs had requested the Naval Board to take measures for apprehending the robbers.
