Revision Ro 2
REGE 22
Law Courts,
380
31st. May, 1912.
I have now had an opportunity of going more
fully into the Attorney-General's list of errors which he has
discovered in the Revised Edition of the Laws.
Before dealing with it I should say that I
have obtained the Treasurer's list of amendments proposed by him originally, and find that the new rating list as approved by the Legislative Council was included in it. It came to be overlooked, and therefore I was wrong in omitting it, and the page will of
course be reprinted.
Now with regard to the Attorney-General's list I must protest at the spirit in which it has been drawn up,
which is clearly indicated by the very childish sarcasm of the
heading "A FEW MISTAKES"; this is not, I think, the way in which
the very laborious work which I have been engaged on for fifteen
months should be attacked by an officer of the Government. When I
first read your letter I imagined that in addition to the errors
which had already been discovered there was a portentious list of
60 more, all of them of great importance. But those which had
been already mentioned to me or referred to in your letter are repeated, and the intention with which it is draw up seems merely to swell the number, so apparently to disparage the value of the
Volumes. I have now been carefully through them, and there are not
more than two that are at all serious and that could not be
perfectly well corrected in the Corrigenda; for the most part
they are slips in figures either in the headlines or the short
titles, and are quite insignificant. The following is an analysis
of them.
Out of the 31 in Vol. I, 12 are errors in the Index, and 8 in the Corrigenda, of which by the way one has been
