I think, Sir, that I have nothing to add in

explanation or extenuation of my conduct, and I can only express my very deep and real regret that my behaviour as a public officer should have been such as to necessitate the making of

such serious charges as those which have been brought against me. If permitted to remain in the service it would be my honest en-

-deavour so to conduct myself as to give no future cause of

offence, and I am content to leave the matter in the hands of His

Excellency in the hope that he may be able to see his way to take

a lenient view of my conduct.
