Your Excellency,

In reply to your Confidential letter No.1116/

10 of 6th. March, 1912, I have the honour to inform you that the objection from a military point of view to the establishment of a commercial wireless station on the Southern end of the D'Aguilar Peninsula is that the defence of such a station by the land forces would be quite outside the bounds of possibility unless the

Infantry Garrison here were at least trebled in strength, and even under such circumstances its protection at night would be a

serious drain on the defences of the Island. Whether the Navy would accept responsibility for the safety of such a station I

cannot say but consider it extremely doubtful.

Were such a station established in the locality

proposed I feel sure that in time of trouble urgent demands for the

protection thereof would be put forward, and as no such protection

could be afforded by the Garrison the installation would be liable

to be destroyed on any night by an enemy.

I would suggest that a much less exposed

position should be selected, for preference one well within the

perimeter of the line of defence.

I return herewith the attachments to Your

Excellency's letter under reply.

lu

Excellency

I have etc.,

(Sd.) C. A. Anderson,

Major-General,

Commanding the Troops in South China.

The Governor and Commander-in-Chief,

Hongkong.
