WAE22 4DR 12,
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG. 25th. March, 1912.
You.7698.
I have the honour to confirm Sir F. D. Lugard's telegram of 13th. March in which he informed you with regret of the death of the late Lance-Sergeant George Arthur Attewell.
2.
I now forward the depositions before the Coroner together with his certificate from which you will see that the deceased died from a bullet wound in the head which was self inflicted.
3.
On 20th. February Lance-Sergeant Attewell while searching passengers' luggage on board S. S. "Sui An" was attacked by a crowd of Chinese and struck on the head with an iron bar. He fired his revolver and wounded
persons one of whom sub- -sequently died.At the enquiry into the circumstances attending the death of this man the jury found "that Sergeant Attewell acted "in self-defence, because from the blow he received in the course *of the morning he could reasonably draw the conclusion that he
"would be further assaulted and that his life was in immediate
"danger. To retreat from an infuriated crowd seemed dangerous in "the circumstances". The affair however appears to have preyed upon his mind and he took his life on the day of the enquiry but
before it was held.
4.
For his 5th. year's service in the Police
Force Attewell had a clean record. Moreover he was twice commended
