Sir

251

IN reply to the 1st paragraph of your letter of the 25th September 1911 I have the honour to refer you to my letter of the 1st or 2nd September (I have hot the CSO in front of me) which will fully explain the understanding on my part as to

pertaining

the Salary to my post: I should like that letter also to be laid before His Excellency the Governor as he evidently did not

see it.

I note what you say in the second paragraph of your letter of the 25th. September.

I may say that I should not have accepted the post of Asst. Crown Solicitor had I known that it did not carry Duty Pay, as the salary attached to the post without Duty Pay is even less than the most junior Managing Clerk is receiving in Solicitors firms in this Colony.

I should like to point out the great advantage the Government have in obtaining some sone who has had five years actual

practice in this Colony as a Solicitor.

The heavy work involved in my post warrants a higher salary and should at least be brought into line with the Cadets third Class billet.

I would respectfully ask that the Secretary of States be asked to sanction the Duty Pay in respect of the post of Assistant Crown Solicitor or that the pay as it now stands be increased. I particularly request that a definite answer be obtained from the Secretary of State before the end of the year.

I have the Honour

to be Sir

Your Obedient Servant

(Sgd.) Paul M. Hodgson.

The Honourable

Mr Warren Barnes.

Colonial Secretary.
