I have the honour to acknowledge your Con- -fidential Despatch of 28th. November, 1911, in which you ack- -nowledged receipt of my telegram of 15th. November, 1911, re- -commending Commander C. W. Beckwith for appointment to the post of Harbour Master should it fall vacant.

I would desire to explain that the reason which prompted me to send that telegram was that a report had reached the Colony and was repeated to me that Carmander B. R. H. Taylor was not returning and that another officer (who was named to me) was likely to be his successor. I therefore telegraphed 43 393 5*
