20th December 1911.

I am commanded by the Army Council to inform

you that a request has been received from the Admiralty

that their detachment of Marines and Sailors which has

been landed at Canton for the protection of the British

Settlement may be replaced by troops; and chat a letter

has been received from the Foreign Office conveying

the approval of the Secretary of State to this proposal.

2. The Council accordingly propose to despatch

80 British Infantry from Hong Kong to be at the

disposal of the Naval Commander-in-Chief in relief of

the landing party of the Royal Navy at Canton.

3. I am to request that, subject to the approval

instructions of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, may be sent by cable to the Governor and Commander-in-Chief at Hong Kong, authorizing him to despatch this detachment.

Instructions are being sent to the General Officer Commanding the Troops, South China, to arrange for their immediate despatch, subject to the approval of
