I extremely regret to have to let you know that
the Patent Bureau has given me notice to the effect that
these applications should be withdrawn because nobody,
a natural person or corporation, belonging to the
British colonies is allowed to make application in this
Country for the registration of trade marks. This is
really a radical change and a decided wonder to those
who are interested in trade marks, patents, &c., but
nevertheless there is no doubt about its truthfulness.
The Anglo-Japanese Commercial Treaty was revised as you
know and put into practice on the 17th July last.
In the Treaty there is a provision to the effect that
no British dependencies shall enjoy the privileges
given thereby unless the home government expressly
indicate the name of the colonies to be covered there-
by within two years. Thus the privileges of the
people of the colonies in respect of the industrial
