No. 1.

SECTION 1.

Sir Edward Grey to Mr. Gaisford.

(No. 62.) Sir,

Foreign Office, August 26, 1911. WITH reference to my despatch No. 58 of the 10th instant, relative to the proposed negotiations between the Chinese and Portuguese Governments, on the subject of Macao, I have to inform you that M. Gomez called at this office on the 17th instant and stated that the Chinese Minister at Paris, who had visited Lisbon and had announced his readiness to discuss the question of the delimitation of the Macao boundary, had left for Paris.

M. Gomez added that the Portuguese Government have every intention of dealing with the evils at Macao, referring, no doubt, to the existence of gambling dens and the smuggling of opium in that island.

I am, &c.
