Company and the English Company

sion, Australasia and China Telegraph Company

both working to furnish China with telegraphic communi-

cation, found it desirable to endeavour to work in

harmony, and there resulted several agreements between

the two Companies and the Chinese Authorities, jointly

and severally.

The Colonial Office now (1911) say that they can

find no trace of having been informed of these Agreements

of a later date than January 21st, 1884.

The Agreement of October 17th 1884 (which granted

the Companies permission to land a cable at Sharp Peak,

and made other arrangements) was not communicated to the

Colonial Office by this Office.

On December 1st, 1886 an Agreement was made between

the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company and the Great

Northern
