Messrs. E. D. and Messrs. David Sassoon and Co. to Foreign Office.--(Received June 24.)
Sir,
9, Fenchurch Avenue, London, June 21, 1911. REFERRING to recent correspondence on the subject of the opinm agreement, we have the honour to inform you that we have to-day received the following telegram from our Hong Kong house :--
Reported Canton tax amounting to 400 taels per chest, as well as restrictions, will be revived on 26th instant.
We hasten to bring this matter to your notice, as immediate and strong measures are necessary if the Chinese provincial authorities are to be prevented from squeezing the trade in disregard of treaties and the recent agreement.
We have, &c.
