According to a statement published in the "China Mail”
of the 14th ultimo, based on information from Peking dated
the 3rd ultimo, an Imperial Edict has been issued sanction-
ing the request of the Board of Communications that all the
telegraph stations in the Empire be under the control of

I shall be glad if Your Excellency will be good
enough to verify this statement; and, if it is correct, I
have the honour to request that I may be supplied with a
copy of the Edict in question and, if possible, with an
authenticated translation into English. I shall also be
glad to know whether as the result of the Edict the
telegraph line from Canton to this Colony has been taken
over by the Chinese Government: and, if so, from what date.
