THE Under-Secretary of State for India presents his compliments to the Under- Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and, by direction of the Earl of Crewe, forwards herewith, for the information of the Secretary of State, copy of a telegram from the Viceroy, dated the 12th January, regarding the Pien-ma expedition.

EXPEDITION to Pien-ma.

January 12, 1911. Please refer to our telegram dated the 4th instant. On the 6th instant the expedition reached Pien-ma unopposed; all well. Though much afraid of the Chinese, the inhabitants are reported by Mr. Hertz to be friendly. Seven days' balt will be made at Pien-ma by the column. Administration of country has been commenced by Mr. Hertz, and appointment orders to the headmen are being issued by him,
