At the present time of late autumn malaria has dis- appeared; propose to depute officials to go to the boundary. Please request British representative at Peking to depute official to make joint investigation."

We have the honour to observe that the suggestion of the Yunnan Viceroy for a combined deputation of officials to make an accurate joint investigation and to add Chinese inscriptions is a thoroughly sound method of procedure; we would accordingly submit for your consideration the deshability of issuing instructions to the British consul at the place in question to take joint action.

Sir,

Enclosure 2 in No. 1.

Prince Ch'ing to Mr. Max Müller.

Peking, November 8, 1910. SOME time ago I received a note from you on the subject of the Burmah Yünnan frontier, in which you asked that instructions in the sense of your note should be sent to the local officials of Yünnan as regards the accuracy of the ninety-seven cairus erected on the frontier from the point where the Nam Paung River unites with the Tai Ping River to the point where the Nam Pa River unites with the Nam Ting.

Subsequently the Board received a telegram in reply from the Viceroy of Yunnan, which was communicated to you in a note asking that instructions should be sent to the British consul at Tengyueh to act in concert with the local officials, but up to the present no reply has been received. A further telegram has now been received from the Viceroy of Younan to the effect that advantage should be taken of the clear weather and the absence of malaria to erect permanent cairns as quickly as possible; further, that the Yuunan officials were ready to proceed to the frontier, and he requested that the British consul should be instructed to proceed thither at once to hold a joint delimitation.

I have the honour to request that your Excellency will send immediate instruc- tions in the above sense, and beg that you will favour me with a reply for commani- cation to the Viceroy of Yunnan.
