Sir:-

With reference to your letter 36193 of the 12th

ultimo forwarding a copy of a despatch from the

Officer Administering the Government of Hongkong rela-

tive to the reopening of the Mint at Canton for the

coinage of twenty cent pieces, I am directed by

Secretary Sir E. Grey to forward to you herewith a

copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Minister at

Peking enclosing a copy of correspondence on the

subject between Sir F. May and Mr. Max Müller, who

was till recently in charge of His Majesty's Legation.

It will be seen that Mr. Max Müller expressed

his inability to intervene in the matter in the sense

desired by Sir F. May without instructions from this

Department, and, in view of the considerations set

forth in Sir J. Jordan's covering despatch, Sir E.

Grey proposes, with the concurrence of the Secretary

of State for the Colonies, to approve Mr. Max Miller's
