SECTION 5.
[45285]
No. 1.
India Office to Foreign Office.-(Received December 15.)
THE Under-Secretary of State for India presents his compliments to the Under- Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and, by direction of the Earl of Crewe, forwards herewith, for the information of the Secretary of State, copy of a telegram to the Viceroy, dated the 8th December, relative to the Pienma expedition.
India Office, December 14, 1910.
Enclosure in No. 1.
The Earl of Crewe to Government of India.
(Telegraphic.) P.
India Office, December 8, 1910. PLEASE refer to your telegram dated the 6th December regarding the expedition to Pienma. I cannot at present approve that part of proposals of Burmah Government which relates to maintenance of military posts on frontier, in view of cost involved and of danger to which such posts would be exposed in isolated positions. Instructions to this effect should at once be issued. Attitude of Chinese must largely influence our future policy on the frontier.
