I am commanded by the Army Council to acknowledge
the receipt of your letter M. of today's date, transmitting
a request from the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty that troops shall be held in readiness at Hong Kong for immediate
despatch to Shanghai.
In reply I am to say that the Council have
instructed the General Officer Commanding the Troops South
China to hold all available troops in readiness for
despatch if so directed by the Governor of b ng Kong.
I am to explain that the detail of troops thus
available is reported by the General Officer Commanding
South China to be as follows :-
British Infantry
Native Infantry
Royal Garrison Artille ry
Royal Engineers
850 (with 4 maxim guns)
150
80 (with 4 mountain guns and
ammunition column) 40
with details of Royal Army Medical Corps and Army Service
Corps.
I am to add that the Council concur in the
proposal that the Commodore at Hong Kong shall be directed
to make the necessary arrangements as to transport.
