With reference to your Confidential

despatch of November 16th, informing me that you had

selected ur Rees Davies for appointment as Chief Justice,

I have the honour to inform you that Mr Gompertz, Puisne

Judge, recently asked me that his name might be con-

sidered for the appointment of Attorney General if at

any time it should fall vacant.

2.

I informed ur Gompertz that you had

ruled that the Attorney General ahould not in future

act for the Chief Justice and that in consequence it

was probable that the Puiane Judge would from time

to time have an opportunity of acting in that position.

Pecuniarily the office of Attorney General would be no

gain to him since the salaries of the two appointments

are identical on a dollar basis. His object therefore in asking to be considered for the Attorney Generalship is of course solely that he may qualify himself in every way for promotion in the future to an appointment as Chief Justice, and if you consider that his retention of the office of Pulane Judge would be just as good a qualification as his assumption of the post of Attorney
