We find that the British Ship "Shiu On"
Official No. 126987 of Hongkong, of which Robert Alexander Johnston, Number of whose Certificate of Competency is 191 Singapore, was Master, left Kong Mun at 6 p.m. November 23rd., on a voyage to Hong- -kong with a general cargo and 164 Chinese passengers.
the
That at 7.10 p.m. the ship took/ground on a
spit N.E. of Staunch Island and remained aground until midnight when she floated off and continued her voyage to Hongkong; that about 5 minutes after taking the ground a number of armed Chinese pirates attacked the ship firing volleys at the European Quarters, situated on the upper deck. The Chief Officer Mr. Nicholson, number of Certificate 035600, Master Mariner, who was in charge of the deck at once went into his cabin and got a revolver and endeavoured to prevent the pirates from boarding the ship; he gallantly remained on duty until he fell mortally wounded in the stomach and was found dead near the central companion way with his revolver partially emptied at 8.15 p.m.
The ship was ransacked by the pirates and valuables to the amount of $10,000 stolen from the passengers and two Chinese passengers were shot in their feet.
The "Shiu On" arrived at Hongkong at 8 a.m.
on the 24th. November and made fast in the lan-of-War Anchorage,
reports being made at once to the Naval Authorities and the Police.
