Yes. I regret to say I do not consider Mr.
Jeffries suitable for the post.
The Director of an Observatory requires as his
Chief Assistant a gentleman who would be a real colleague, and able to
take his place when necessary.
2.
My opinion was not asked: but when it appeared
that Mr. Jeffries might be recommended for the post to the Secretary
of State, without reference to me, I thought it advisable to write
as I did.
3.
As there is sufficient time, and it is very
desirable that the Director should have a voice in the selection of
his Chief Assistant, advertisement as suggested by me seemed to be
the best plan.
