THE COLONIAL SECRETARY by command of His Excellency the Governor, laid on the table the following papers: Sessional paper No. 14, being an abstract showing the difference between the estimates of expenditure and revenue for the years 1911 and 1912; Sessional paper No. 16, being a financial statement in connection with the estimates for 1912 and the draft estimates for 1912.

Questions by Mr. Pollock

HON. MR. POLLOCK, pursuant to notice, asked the following questions :--

(1) Has the Government received any, and, if so, what reply from the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies t the unanimous equest of the Unofficial Members, made in isouncil on the 1st of June last, that the Military Contribution be fixed at the aurual sum of one million dollars?

(2.) Will the Government by upon the table the correspondence which has passed etween the Gove an eut and the secretary of State and vice verse in connection with the aforesaid request?

(3. Can the Government give the Council any further information with reference to the est b'ishment of a wireless telegraph station in this colouy?

(4) When will the detailed returns of the Census, which was taken in May, be published ?

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY plied as follows :----

(1) The answer is in the negative.

(3) His Excellency the Governor has only 10-day received a reply from the Chamber of Commerce to a number of questions on this subject which were asked with a view to obtain- ing certain definite information. His Ex- cellency is also stili in correspondence with the Secretary of State for the Colonies on the matter, the correspondence being, as the Council will recognise, necessarily of a confidential nature. His Excellency has, however, reason to hope that the issue will be satisfactory.

(4) The complete census report will be laid before Council early in November. The census officer reports that it is now ready with the exception of certain totals of Occupation and Birthplace.

THE COLONIAI, SECRETARY moved the first reading of a Bill entitled, “An Ordinance to apply a sum not exceeding thousand seven hundred and seventy-one Five million eight hundred and ninety-nine

Dollars to the Public Service of the year 1912."
