I have the honour with great regret to confirm my telegram of the 29th. ultimo informing you of the sudden death on the 28th. ultimo of Mr. W. D. Barnes, the late Colonial Secretary.

I enclose a newspaper account of the circumstances in which Mr. Barnes died, to which I may add that Dr. J. M. Atkinson, Principal Civil Medical Officer, reported that an autopsy was done on the 29th. ultimo and the
cause of death was as follows:- "Heart failure due to dilata-
-tion of the right side of the heart with fatty degeneration and atheroma of the coronary arteries and aorta".
