In continuation of my Despatch No. 129

of the 11th. of last April, I have the honour to transmit to you the enclosed certificate signed by an Officer representing the Colonial Secretary and by the Colonial Treasurer as to the amount of silver dollars exchanged for sovereigns as deposit in respect of the note issue of the Hongkong and Shanghai

I fancy, and the S. of S. either formally appro-

ved or let the matter pass without question. It is

quite safe, since if the dollar went above 2/- we

could immediately require an additional pessit

deposit to cover the deficiency. As regards the Bank,

they find it no doubt convenient to hold a certain

reserve of gold, and this reserve they can deposit

temporarily with the Govt., knowing that they can

alwys get it out again by reducing their excess

note issue,
