With the great losses that have to be faced in
connexion with opium revenue, to say nothing
of losses resulting from the present distar-
bances in China, I do not see how the financial
position can possibly justify us in finding
from Govt. funds the salary of a Professor for
the University.
If the proposal is to be entertained, I should
much prefer the annual vote of a salary to
the vote of a large lump sum a salary can
at any rate be discontinued when a Professor
dies or quits office, and a large lump sum is
beyond the present means of the Colony. If a
salary is voted, sure'6,000 or 5,000 would be
ample. Professors can earn money by private
teaching, writing books &c.
