GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 4th. October, 1911.

As I understand that Sir F. T. Piggott

will retire at the end of April next, I have the honour to

request that the appointment of his successor may not be delay-

-ed longer than is necessary.

2.

You have ruled that the Attorney-

-General should not act as Chief Justice, and Mr. F. A. Hazeland

who acted as Puisne Judge during Mr. H. H. J. Compertz's absence

on leave last year will himself be absent on leave next summer.

I shall, therefore, find it extremely difficult to fill the

vacancy temporarily and it is impossible for the work of the

Supreme Court to be carried on (except for brief periods during

vacation) by a single Judge.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

Governor,&c..

RICHT HONOURABLE

LETIS HARCOURT, M.P..
