Colonial Secretary's Office,

Hongkong, 8, H911.

}

With reference to the letter from this de- -partment No. 3462/08 Conf. of the 27th. January, 1910, I am directed to inform you that the Secretary of State for the Colonies has noticed from the proceedings in the recent action brought against you in the Supreme Court of Hongkong that you appear to have rendered assistance to the Hongkong Butchery Company on many occasions and in various ways, e.g. you had paid

xxx various sums of money to an employé of the Company for wages; you had cashed several cheques for Team Kee connected with the business; you had written a letter for the Company ordering butter from one Johnson; and you had given a chit to the Ice Company also in connection with the Butchery Company's business.

2.

The Secretary of State desires that you should be called upon to explain how you reconcile these transactions with the assurance which you gave this Government in paragraph 7 of your letter of the 20th. October, 1909, that you had "at no time rendered any assistance of any kind in the carrying on of a trade or business in this Colony or elsewhere", an assurance which you repeated in your petition to the Secretary of State dated the 7th. December, 1909.

3.

I am therefore directed by His Excellency t

the Governor to request you to furnish the desired explanation at

your early convenience.

I am etc., (Sd.) W. D. Barnes,

Colonial Secretary.

F. Howell, Esq.
