I have the honour to reply to your

Despatch No. 6 of the 6th. of January last on the subject of

certain allowances paid to Messrs. A. E. Wright, J. E. Piercy

and W. T. Edwards, and to express my regret that it has been

allowed to remain so long unanswered.

The instructions contained in Lord Crewe's

Despatches Nos. 338 of 31st. December, 1909, and No. 6 of 7th.

January, 1910, will in future be strictly followed.

3.

I note that you are unable to sanction

without further explanation the special payments of $130.93 made

to Messrs. Piercy and Edwards. It was by an oversight that in my

Despatch No. 332 of 11th. November, 1909, no report was made to

you that payment of these allowances had been authorised by me

pending your confirmation of my action. Your Despatch No. 6 of

7th. January, 1910, requesting further information concerning
