Granslation of
The humble Address presented by the people of Cheung Chan (1)
We rejoice in British rule as though a gift from Henuen has descended on us, and to manifest our gratiinde aud faith we should present Your Onjesty with the sun-light. Cheung Chan Hoymenty a burren desented island is now cousred with habitations built on the mountain slopes; from our homes the che can qange over endless chains of monutaius, and from the share where we carry on our business we can gaze on bound- less expanses of ocean. Successive generations of our families have lived here throughout the ages and our sons and grandsons are numbered in hundreds. Since our land has been included in British Territory we have been ruled by a benevolent government whose gode of punishments is like a net open on three sides. (2) Your beneuolence has extended to infinite distances exceeding even the Emperors au and Wu. Your Dajesty's bounty was extended to all the people and its influence is like the influence of Spqing. We are influenced by Yong Dajesty's bqueuolence like grass swaying beforg the breeze. We rejoice that throughout the world all disputes have been allayed by Yang Dajesty's vintne.
