The outlying fishing villages on the islands

and in the New Territories were not forgotten. Mr. Orme, the District Officer, writes that the greatest enthusiasm prevailed. The places selected were Aberdeen, Cheung Chau, Tai 0, Tai Po, each of which constitutes the centre and market town of its district. The entertainment consisted of Sports on sea and shore, dinners to the Chief Residents, tea to the children, processions and illuminations. Loyal addresses were presented by the Elders.

The Festivities were divided into two parts:

the first, on the evening of 22nd. June, a Garden Fête in connex- -ion with Your Excellency's Reception; the second, the lantern illumination of the City with fireworks in the harbour. On both occasions there was a very elaborate Fish-Lantern Procession organised by the Chinese.

In connexion with both evenings I desire particularly to refer to the very great and willing assistance which the Committee received from the Officers of the Garrison,

and of the Men-of-War in the harbour. On the 22nd. June the

assistance was specially valuable, as a typhoon swept past the Colony late on the afternoon of the 21st. and very strenuous

efforts were necessary to accomplish what there was to do in

time.

A Japanese Man-of-War was stationed in the

harbour and took its share with the Fleet in the illuminations

and fireworks.

The Committee invited the Governor-General

of the Philippines to send a Delegation to participate in the celebrations. The invitation was accepted in most cordial terms;

a copy of the Governor-General's letter has already been sent to Your Excellency.
