Under instructions from the Secretary of State
His Excellency the Governor directs me to offer you the appoint- -ment of Director Designate of the Hongkong Observatory on the terms set out in the accompanying papers of particulars.

It appears from the Secretary of State's Despatch
that the present Director r. Fice, will retire in February,
1912, and that if you accept the appointment now offered you will
succeed to the post of Director on his retirement, but that
until that date you will work under his direction.
3.
The Secretary of State adds that it is desirable
that you should leave Mauritius as soon as possible after the
10th. May, on which date the post of Chief Assistant of the
Observatory becomes vacant, to take up duty in Hongkong and so
that you may have the benefit of Mr. Figg's experience for as long a period as possible before he retires.
