commencing salary appeared to be covered by article 81 of the

Regulations.

salary would be £420 per annum.

Having served in Mauritius for nearly 12 years without leave, except on account of sickness, I proceeded at once to Hongkong at the request of this Government, thus undergoing the strain of two hot seasons in succession without the opportunity of recruiting my health which I might reasonably have expected. I arrived in the Colony to find that the sulary of the office was rather less than that of a senior shop Assistant or Merchant's clerk, and that house rent was exorbitant.

These facts seem to entitle me to rather

more than ordinary consideration from this Colony, and I trust that His Excellency may be pleased to reconsider the matter in this light and deal as liberally with me in the matter of house allowance and commencing salary as the circumstances appear to

warrant.

Any duty pay which His Excellency may be pleased to allow will be much appreciated, and will tend to make the appointment what in Mauritius it appeared to be.

The com.encing srlary of £460 sugested by the Colonial Treasurer is not an increment as laid down in the last

sentence of article 81 of the Regulations.
