Hon. Attorney-General,

I beg to tender my answers to the charges:-

As to the 1st. charge I beg leave to explain that I

received a message at sometime after 4 p.m. from my wife who was

then enciente and I did not think I would be more than fifteen

minutes away: I am sorry I did not report the occurrence to you

at the time.

As to the 2nd. charge I beg leave to state that on my

applying for an hour's leave from 4 to 5 some two or three days

before you asked for a reason and when I said "private affairs"

you insisted upon my telling you the nature of the affairs, and

the repetition of such a request did, I regret to say, irritate

me somewhat. I beg to apologize for the occurrence.

As to the 3rd. I admit I stated I would give my reasons

to Mr. Fletcher, who was then present, weaning of course because

he understands Chinese and being a gentleman he would act im-

-partially. I certainly did not mean to imply that you were

neither clever nor a gentleman: your position speaks for itself.

As to the 4th. I beg to state that the gentleman

named therein had on a few occasions sent his own house boy 'to

look see' me (the boy himself told me this) and the fact that

you sent up the office coolie up to my house gave me the im- -pression that that gentleman might have communicated with you.

As to the 5th. the same reply; but I regret that I did

not explain to you at the time.

As to the 6th. I beg to state that if I had been in the condition alleged by him it was his duty to charge me then

and there.

As to the 7th. I do not admit that I was a nuisance to

the Police; but I do admit that I wrote up to Mr. Hanson asking

whether a Chinese Detective would casually look in, as I had a

case for him. The European P.C. locked and I told him that he

would not know of the case.
