I hereby certify that the Steamship "Sui Sang" sailed from Hong Kong

For Salina Cruz on the Second day of April 1908, with 30 Cabin, and 518

teerage passengers for the last named port. These passengers were care-

lly selected in Hong Kong and were all in good health. The steerage bassengers were examined individually upon three separate days previous to

eparture from Hong Kong by the Port Doctor and granted a personal certifi-

bate of good health.

There was no case of constitutional disease among them during the voy-

age and all arrived at the port of Salina Cruz in good health, with the exception of 110 cases of conjunctivitis, which developed during the last

week of the voyage. The conjunctivitis disappeared and they all remained

in good health until nearly one month had elapsed after arrival. Beri-beri

then appeared, due without doubt, to the long confinement of so many (417)

persons upon the small space of a ship. They had been on board 70 days and

at Salina Cruz 27 days when the first death occurred, June 11th.

There was

The number

other on June 21st, another June 26th and two more July 5th.

of Beri-beri cases have continued to increase until now we have 94.

!

The heat of this vlimate combined with the enforced inactivity of our

passengers, due to lack of space which it is not possible for a ship tørrpa- to provide, is very enervating and will undermine the best constitution and

render the individual a prey to the first infection that comes his way.

I also wish to certify that I have been accustomed to treating Chinese

diseases for the last four and one half years, that I am 59 years of age and

graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Penn., U.S.A., in the

Class of 1894.
