On June 11th, 1908, at 5.30 p.m., the Company's chartered steamer the s.s. "Marie" left Hong Kong with 250 steerage passengers on board, arriving at Salina Cruz on July 17th. 152 passengers were landed leaving_98_refused. She was detained there from June 11th to August 10th, 1908.

In the cases of the Suisang and the Landratschieff the

passengers were examined by Drs. Valenzuela and Golchichoal but not independently)

In the case of the Marie the examination was conducted by

Dr. Golchichoe alone.

These two Doctors were the first and second Delegate of the Fort respectively.

The têdal number of rejected passengers of the three ships was therefore 924 and in addition there were 14 who were landed

from the previous trip of the s.s. "Marie" and had been detained at the Company's barracks, and were subsquently sent on board the "suisang" thus raising the total to 928.

On account of the heat (Salina Cruz being within the heart of the tropica) and the close condition on board ship, Beri-beri broke out on board the ships which raged on board all the time while the steamers were at anchor and even during their return voyages, and so far as it has come within the knowledge of the Company, 130 of the rejected passengers died of this disease

either while on board or after landing at Japan or Hongkong. It is in respect of these persons that the Company has claimed against the Mexican Government for compensation on behalf of their families.

In view of the fact that the reason which was given for rejecting all these men was on account of their having TRACHOMA, the precautions taken by the Company to prevent trachomatous and other contagiously diseased passengers from taking passage may here be set out bn order to shew that the
