satisfactory to Government, he would be placed on the permanent
pensionable staff of the Hongkong Civil Service, with effect
from the date of his original appointment.

The salary will be equivalent to a rate
of £800 to £1,000 by E100 triennially approximately, but I
propose to express it in terms of Duty Pay, and to include the
post in the new arrangement of Sterling Salaries (with Duty
Pay) which I am about to submit to you in a separate Despatch.

Mr. Lindsey has written to his Directors

asking for an extension of his leave until the end of the
current year and I have telegraphed to you asking you to be
good enough to support this request. In any event, however, it
will be advisable for Mr. Winslow to arrive here about one
month before Mr. Lindsey's departure in order tuat he may have
the benefit of the latter's experience and advice.
