understood at the time that most of the work would be done by

the Deputy as it was impossible for the Land Officer to devote

much time to it owing to the heavy work of the Land Office

but this would not preclude the Official Receiver from giving

a certain amount of assistance in normal times. That he is

able to do so is demonstrated by the fact that he is at pre-

-sent performing the duties of Registrar, Supreme Court, in

additional to those of Land Officer,

When Mr. Fletcher was appointed to his

present post he was informed that he would probably be requir-

-ed to act as officer in charge of Trade Marks without

additional remuneration but at that date the Trade Marks

Ordinance 1909 was not under consideration and the duties

which would in the ordinary course have devolved upon him

would have been mainly clerical, the decision on all matters

resting with the Governor and the Attorney-General. Under the new Ordinance the Registrar has the entire responsibility of

the registration of Trade Marks subject to certain provisions

for appeal, and as the new procedure is considerably more elaborate than that hitherto obtaining the Registrar's work

has been proportionately increased. I may add that the

registration of Letters Patent also has since been placed in

his charge.
