I have the honour to inform you that I
received a telegram from His Majesty's Consul-General at
Canton on the morning of 28th. ultimo informing me that a
revolutionary outbreak had occurred the previous evening in
the City and resulted in the burning of the Viceroy's Yamen,
followed in the evening by further news to the effect that
the situation was unchanged, and though the Chinese were
excited all Europeans were safe. The Viceroy telegraphed to me
urging me *for public peace sake" not to allow some 200 suspec
-ted revolutionaries (who were alleged to have arrived here by
the French Mail from Singapore) to remain in the Colony or go
to Canton. I made and a continuing to make enquiries regard-
-ing these suspects, and I wrote assuring His Excellency of my
desire to assist him in every way possible. I also requested
Mr. J. W. Jamieson to recall the Cadets who are studying
Chinese
