Hon. Colonial Secretary,
I submit the attached petition from thrée of
the 3rd. class Inspectors. It is a fact that owing to the allow-
-ances of various sorts that are open to Sergeants but not to
Inspectors a 3rd. class Inspector is in general worse off
pecuniarily than a Sergeant. It was in recognition of this fact
that allowances were granted to married Inspectors doing duty in
Victoria. I think the unmarried men also deserve some considera-
-tions I am of opinion that the fairest thing to do would be to
abolish 3rd. class Inspectorships and have only two classes. I
have spoken with the petitioners and this would satisfy them. There are only four 3rd. class Inspectorships. The cost of raising them
all to 2nd. class would be about $1,033.00 a year.
