visited me.
Principal Warder McLeod states:-
277
I was called by Warder Ellis about 2.40 p.m. yesterday. I was under the impression that he wanted me to remove the sand boxes from the cell. When I entered the Hall Warder Ellis said "No. 517 is not here". I then said *Is he not upstairs ? I cannot remember Warder Ellis saying anything about the prisoner's clothing being in No. 52 cell, No. 2 Ward. I told him to search the cell. I went round No. 2 Ward and saw that the window bars at the West end of the building, No. 2 Ward, had been tampered with, and I also saw a suit of prisoner's clothing on the floor of No.52 cell. I then reported the matter to the Chief Warder.
Chief Warder Pierpoint states:-
Principal Warder McLeod came on duty at 12.15 p.m. the 13th. instant and from that time till 2.45 p.m. his duty is to patrol all parts of the prison. He should visit each locality about every 15 minutes. At 2.40 p.m., Principal Warder McLeod reported to me that No. 517 was missing.
No question.
Principal Warder McLeod:-
15 minutes is not time enough to properly visit each station and properly visit each locality.
