I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of

your dispatch No. 6038/07 under date of 29th. of October, regard- -ing the erection of a crematorium and a chapel in Sookumpoo Valley.

After careful consideration, The Japanese Community request me to convey their sincere thanks for the approval of the grant to them of a Crown Lease at a nominal rent of site in the Sookumpoo Valley for the purpose, and regport to you as follows:-

I.

The aggregate cost of the erection of the crematorium, chapel, and laying out the compound as a garden will be about $3,500 which would mean rather a heavy burden for so small community as that of the Japanese in this Colony.

II.

Under such circumstances, it would be beyond the means of the Japanese community to raise a further fund for the levelling and fencing the proposed site. If, however, the expenses is not great the said community will bear the cost by means of loan raised at home.

III.

The Japanese Community wishes, therefore,

to know whether the Colonial Government would kindly make estimate of the total expenses of levelling and of erecting a boundary fence.

I have etc..

(Sd.) T. Funetsu,

Consul and Acting Consul-Ceneral for

Japan.

he Honourable

The Colonial Secretary Hongkong.
