Enclosure 1.

Sir,

REC PEG 26

Public Works Office,

Hongkong, 1st. March, 1911124

I beg to forward recommendations by the Principal Land Surveyor with regard to a proposal to remove a cow- -shed which interferes with the construction of the approach path

Brematorium

to the proposed Japanese Cemetery. The lot on which the cow-shed at present stands is an isolated one, but, owing to the configuration of the ground, it is not possible to construct the approach path clear of it except at considerable expense.

It will be advantageous, on sanitary grounds, to have the shed reconstructed in the vicinity of Tai Hang Village, where there are already a number of other sheds occupied by dairy- -men. I consider the terms proposed by the Principal Land Surveyor fair and reasonable and recommend that they be approved. The lease of the existing lot is an annual one and it is proposed to convert it into a 75 years' one in granting the new area. This course has been adopted in other similar cases, a modified premium being imposed in respect of the extension of the period of the lease. Under the terms proposed, after allowing a sum of $250 as com- -pensation for the removal of the existing building, there remains a sum of 8425 payable as premium in respect of the new lot.

I have etc., (Sd.) W. Chatham,

Director of Public Works.

The Honourable

The Colonial Secretary.
