I have the honour to acknow-
ledge the receipt of your despatch no
.56 of the 10th of February in which
you recommend that when Capain Lyons
retires from the post of Deputy
Superintendent of Police he should be
succeeded by Mr E..Hallifax, and
that that officer should be given a
salary of $4800 rising to $5400.
2. I regret that I could not in
any case have agreed to the proposed
salary. As you point out in para-
graph 3 of your despatch, an officer
who has not accepted the sterling
